About Linux. |
What is it, exactly?
Linux is an operating system, like Windows. It was created as an open source version of the much older UNIX operating system (Learn More). What makes it so different than Windows and MacOS is that it has an open-source license, which means you can
One of the key philosophies of UNIX is this: |
Unix was not designed to stop its users from doing stupid things, as that would also stop them from doing clever things.
This philosophy was carried on to Linux, and you can do even more things because of the open-source license.
If it's so good, why isn't it used?
Linux is actually used much more than you realized. As I said previously, Linux is used in Android and Chrome OS. It's used in much more. Do you have a car with some type of screen? Your car is probably using Linux. Do you have an electronic type home appliance, like Nest? That also probably uses Linux. The most powerful machines, like supercomputers? Linux. The reason it's used is because of the following reasons.
- People didn't have to make their own operating system from scratch, because that would take a very long time.
- Because of the open-source license, the company can make whatever changes they need.
- The company can use something universal, that's used everywhere.
